In a significant shift for manufacturing, AI is playing a crucial role in optimizing production processes for a range of products, from shampoo to pet food. Prose, a beauty brand, has successfully reduced its shampoo production costs by integrating automation into its operations. This trend is not limited to cosmetics; companies like Bausch + Lomb faced substantial manufacturing challenges due to the soaring demand for their single-use contact lenses. To address this, CEO Brent Saunders adopted innovative AI software named Atlas, developed by Arena AI. This technology assists workers by predicting machinery issues before they occur, allowing for timely maintenance and minimizing downtime. The implementation of Atlas has been pivotal, leading to increased lens production that would not have been feasible without such advanced AI capabilities. According to a recent KPMG survey, 77% of manufacturers plan to ramp up their AI investments within the next year, highlighting the growing reliance on technology in production. Startups are also embracing this trend. Spot & Tango, a pet food manufacturer, opened its first production facility in Pennsylvania to enhance quality control. The facility, operational since late 2022, initially relied on manual processes for coordinating supplies and scheduling production. However, the introduction of an agentic AI tool from Didero has transformed operations, automating approximately 60% of the purchase orders, allowing the company to scale production efficiently without additional hiring. FranklinWH Energy Storage is another example of AI's impact on manufacturing. The company has integrated AI at its new California facility for visual inspections of home batteries, enhancing quality control and predicting potential issues before they arise. COO Vincent Ambrose noted that this approach is a learning process that could eventually extend to their Asian manufacturing sites. Prose's journey began in 2017, where manual assembly led to higher production costs. Now, with the use of autonomous robotics and 200 algorithms developed by its data scientists, Prose has achieved a significant reduction in production costs, with automation now comprising 90% of its processes. COO Arnaud Plas emphasized the importance of these advancements in making custom hair care products more affordable. Despite the promising developments, Spot & Tango's Munro remains cautious about the influx of AI solutions, advocating for a thoughtful approach to implementation. He highlights the potential pitfalls of rushing into new technologies, emphasizing the need for thorough testing and adaptation by employees.
