Leaving the V8 in the past: The all-electric Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door

In a dazzling event that took place on the Sixth Street Viaduct in Downtown Los Angeles, Mercedes-AMG has launched its latest innovation in electric performance vehicles: the all-new four-door GT Coupe. This unveiling marks a significant shift in the automotive industry, demonstrating the brand's commitment to fully electric technology amidst an evolving landscape. The new GT Coupe represents a departure from traditional internal combustion engines, incorporating advanced features such as cutting-edge axial motors from YASA and Formula 1-inspired battery cells. Notably, the vehicle is based on the record-setting Concept AMG GT XX, setting the stage for a new era in high-performance electric driving. The event was graced by personalities from Mercedes’ F1 team, with driver George Russell introducing the car while team principal Toto Wolff and driver Kimi Antonelli cheered from the stands. The star-studded evening included appearances by Hollywood celebrities, including Brad Pitt, who showcased the GT by driving it onto the bridge, alongside Jacob Elordi and Kevin Hart, all while Blink 182 entertained the crowd with a lively performance. While celebrity appearances may have added glamour to the launch, potential buyers will be more focused on the vehicle's specifications and pricing when it hits the market in the 2027 model year. The design of the new GT is a stark contrast to previous Mercedes EVs, moving away from the bulbous shapes of the EQ lineup to a sleek, modern aesthetic that features a prominent front grille, streamlined headlights, and a distinctive Kamm-tail rear end reminiscent of Aston Martin designs. In terms of dimensions, the new GT Coupe is engineered for aerodynamic efficiency, measuring 1.7 inches shorter in height and 1.4 inches longer overall compared to its predecessor, with a wheelbase extended by 3.5 inches. Inside, the vehicle boasts an increasingly digital cockpit with a reimagined dashboard and angled touchscreens. Although media representatives were not allowed to sit inside during the event, shared diagrams indicate a conventional EV skateboard chassis enhanced with features such as a center spine for key components and foot garages to optimize driver comfort. Additionally, the car offers a spacious hatchback trunk behind the second-row seats, complemented by a compact 1.4-cubic-foot frunk for added utility.
