Razorpay, in collaboration with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), has officially launched a groundbreaking feature called “Agentic Payments” utilizing Anthropic’s Claude. This innovative system allows users to conduct food, grocery, and quick-commerce transactions seamlessly within AI conversations, marking a significant advancement in digital payment solutions. Announced at the India AI Impact Summit, this feature aims to eliminate the need for users to switch between applications or manually input payment details. Currently in a pilot phase with a select group of users, Agentic Payments integrates payment processing into the conversational interface, enabling Claude to handle transactions securely on behalf of the user. The technological foundation of this initiative combines Razorpay’s payment infrastructure, NPCI’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) framework, and the conversational capabilities of Claude. Transactions are facilitated by UPI Reserve Pay, which allows users to set a predetermined spending limit for merchants, enabling multiple purchases without the need to re-enter a PIN each time. Users maintain control with real-time tracking, adjustable spending limits, and the option to revoke consent at any moment. This new commerce model is designed to enhance user experience and streamline the purchasing process. For example, users can simply instruct Claude to order snacks for their team from Zomato, and the AI will present options, verify selections, and complete the payment—all within the same conversation. Similarly, asking for “dinner for two under ₹1,000” prompts the AI to suggest tailored options from Swiggy based on previous preferences before finalizing the order. Grocery and quick-commerce orders through Zepto follow a similar conversational pathway. India's advanced digital infrastructure is instrumental in supporting this model. With UPI's real-time, consent-driven architecture and the increasing frequency of digital transactions—particularly in the food and grocery sectors—the ecosystem is well-positioned for AI-enhanced commerce at scale. Harshil Mathur, CEO & Co-Founder of Razorpay, commented on the launch, stating, “AI should go beyond just making recommendations—it should execute transactions. We are thrilled to partner with Anthropic and NPCI to realize this vision. The key challenge in AI-driven commerce lies in building trust. By merging UPI’s consent-based approach with Razorpay’s payment solutions, we can empower AI agents across India to conduct transactions transparently, securely, and under user control.” Sohini Rajola, Executive Director of Growth at NPCI, added, “UPI was designed to make digital payments straightforward, secure, and accessible. Agentic Payments elevates that vision into a new era. With UPI Reserve Pay, users can provide consent once and enable intelligent systems to transact for them in a controlled and transparent manner. Our partnership with Razorpay and Anthropic paves the way for a new commerce model, where AI and UPI collaborate to enhance everyday transactions, making them quicker, safer, and more intuitive.” This launch serves as part of Razorpay’s broader commitment to innovating within AI-driven fintech solutions, following previous efforts in the agentic payments space. Industry experts view this development as a pivotal step toward integrating commerce directly into conversational AI, potentially transforming how consumers in India discover, decide, and pay in a unified digital experience.
