Aravind Srinivas introduces ‘Perplexity Patents’, an AI-powered patent research

Perplexity AI has unveiled a groundbreaking tool known as Perplexity Patents, designed to transform the way individuals search and analyze patent information. This initiative was announced by CEO Aravind Srinivas on Thursday, marking the platform as potentially the first AI-driven patent research assistant available globally in beta version. The objective of Perplexity Patents is to democratize access to intellectual property insights by enabling users to conduct patent inquiries using natural language queries. Unlike traditional methods that often require complex keyword structures or specialized search techniques, this innovative tool simplifies the process. In a blog post, Perplexity emphasized the importance of patents as embodiments of human creativity and innovation. The company pointed out that while patent databases are rich in knowledge, traditional search tools often pose challenges due to their rigid interfaces and technical jargon, making it hard for the average person to navigate. Perplexity Patents aims to overcome these hurdles by offering a conversational, AI-assisted method for exploring patent data. Users can pose questions such as, "Are there any patents on AI for language learning?" or "What are the key quantum computing patents since 2024?" The system efficiently returns relevant patent collections, complete with inline viewers and links to original documents. The platform is designed to handle follow-up inquiries and maintain context throughout a series of interactions, allowing users to refine their research seamlessly. Additionally, it suggests related topics for further exploration, providing a more dynamic user experience akin to that of an interactive assistant rather than a conventional search engine. Perplexity's technology is also capable of recognizing conceptual relationships among documents, which means it can identify patents linked to concepts like "fitness trackers," even if they are referred to by different names such as "activity bands" or "health monitoring wearables." Moreover, the reach of Perplexity Patents transcends traditional patent archives. It can extract insights from academic publications, open-source software repositories, and other publicly accessible data, offering a more comprehensive view of emerging technologies and inventions. The tool is launching as a free beta product, accessible to users worldwide. For those who subscribe to Perplexity’s Pro and Max tiers, additional features such as higher usage limits and enhanced configuration options will be available. The company also hinted at the development of Perplexity Scholar, which aims to support academic research similarly.
