In a bold move to enhance online security, the company World, co-founded by Sam Altman, has unveiled innovative ID verification technology designed to combat the proliferation of AI-generated content that poses challenges in distinguishing real users from automated systems. This initiative follows Altman's earlier efforts with OpenAI, which many critics hold responsible for the influx of low-quality AI content flooding the internet. This week, Tools for Humanity (TFH), the startup behind World, rolled out a beta version of a groundbreaking verification tool aimed at facilitating agentic commerce. This burgeoning trend utilizes AI programs to navigate websites and make purchases autonomously on behalf of users. While this automation offers remarkable convenience, it also raises significant concerns about potential fraud and internet misuse. To address these issues, World has introduced AgentKit, a software development tool tailored for commercial websites. AgentKit incorporates a verification system that enables online retailers to confirm that a genuine person is directing their AI agents’ purchasing actions. At the core of this system is World ID, which is crucial to TFH’s verification framework. The most secure variant of this ID is generated through a scan of the user’s iris using World’s Orb device, which transforms the iris pattern into a unique encrypted digital code. This verified World ID can be utilized to access a suite of services offered through the World app. Furthermore, AgentKit allows users to integrate their World ID with the newly launched x402 payment protocol, a blockchain-based standard developed by Coinbase and Cloudflare. This protocol facilitates direct online transactions between automated computer programs without requiring human oversight at every stage. Users can easily register their AI agents with their World ID, which then communicates through the x402 system to verify to websites that a trustworthy human is endorsing the agent’s transactions. TFH stated, "AgentKit is designed as a complementary extension to the x402 v2 protocol, in collaboration with Coinbase, to enable unique human verification alongside micropayments for any website utilizing x402." In a discussion with TechCrunch, Tiago Sada, TFH’s Chief Product Officer, described the function as akin to granting “power of attorney” to an AI agent. This verification allows websites to assess whether to trust transactions initiated by these agents based on the assurance that they operate on behalf of a legitimate user. Sada emphasized that the World ID badge confirms the identity of a real and unique human, although websites retain the discretion to block users suspected of malicious intent. Currently in beta testing, AgentKit is being offered to developers with the anticipation that user feedback will enhance its functionality. To participate, consumers must possess a verified World ID obtained through an Orb scan, making this verification process timely as prominent e-commerce platforms and financial services increasingly adopt agentic commerce. Notably, giants like Amazon and MasterCard have already integrated automated purchasing features, while Google has introduced its own protocol to support this trend. As this sector expands, the demand for robust safeguards to maintain reliability and stability has never been more critical. Through this initiative, World aims to establish itself as the leading provider of such essential protections.
