Gecko Robotics, a robotics startup based in Pittsburgh, has embarked on a groundbreaking partnership with the U.S. Navy, securing a substantial $71 million contract aimed at revolutionizing ship repair processes. This initiative comes as the government accelerates efforts to modernize America's aging defense systems amid rising geopolitical challenges. The innovative robots developed by Gecko Robotics possess the unique ability to fly, swim, and navigate critical infrastructure. Equipped with advanced cameras and sensors, these machines can drastically reduce what traditionally takes three months down to a mere two days. According to CEO Jake Loosararian, these robots can also evaluate maintenance needs at a pace 50 times quicker than conventional manual methods. "This is a transformative leap that was previously unimaginable, and it highlights why it has taken so long to get a destroyer out of dry dock," Loosararian expressed during a CNBC interview. He emphasized the urgency of enhancing fleet readiness, stating the Navy aims for an 80% operational capacity by 2027, allowing military personnel to concentrate on strategic threats. In a climate of increasing reliance on advanced defense technology, startups like Gecko are becoming essential in the modernization efforts of the U.S. military. Their cutting-edge artificial intelligence and autonomous solutions are challenging established defense contractors, offering innovative approaches to age-old problems. Loosararian further remarked, "While software plays a crucial role, the effectiveness of artificial intelligence in decision-making is dependent on the quality of data inputs. This represents a fundamental shift in how robotics can enhance military operations. What Gecko is accomplishing has never been achieved by any other military robotics company." Under the Biden administration, there has been a renewed focus on revitalizing U.S. shipbuilding capabilities, which have historically lagged behind competitors like China. In response, the administration recently unveiled a comprehensive plan aimed at revitalizing this critical sector. Gecko Robotics has a proven track record, having collaborated with various industries, including mining, manufacturing, and energy, to modernize aging equipment and expedite repair timelines. Notably, they have partnered with defense contractor L3Harris Technologies and mining giant Freeport-McMoRan. The company's valuation reached $1.25 billion following a $125 million funding round in June, underscoring its growing influence in the defense technology landscape.
