In a landscape where job hunting can feel overwhelming, a new startup called Refer is flipping the script on traditional recruiting. This innovative platform caters specifically to tech professionals, allowing candidates to pay a fee only if they land a job, creating a unique 'reverse recruiting' model. Hansheng Liu, a recent computer science graduate from the University of Illinois, initially struggled to secure a position. After enhancing his résumé, he turned to Refer, which employs an AI-driven agent to match job seekers with potential employers. Unlike conventional recruiting methods where employers pay recruiters, Refer charges candidates 20% of their first month's salary only upon successful placement. Liu's second attempt with Refer proved fruitful, leading to four interviews, including one with a Bay Area company that ultimately hired him. Liu expressed satisfaction with the service, stating, "They helped me land a job. It's so worth it." Founded by Andre Hamra, Refer recently secured $7.5 million in seed funding to further its mission of facilitating connections between job seekers and companies. Hamra's vision is to reimagine the recruitment process by ensuring that both candidates and employers are genuinely interested before any introductions are made. Job seekers provide detailed information on their experience, salary expectations, and role preferences, while employers select the roles for which they’re open to referrals. Once a match is identified, Refer's AI agent, named Lia, initiates contact via email. Remarkably, more than half of users receive interview invitations within 24 hours of being introduced. The platform has already facilitated over 5,000 interviews and has attracted around 2,000 employers with approximately 7,000 job openings. Originally focused on elite software engineers, Refer has expanded its reach to all tech workers across the U.S. Hamra's motivation for creating Refer stemmed from his own challenges in helping talented individuals find suitable job opportunities. He noted that many candidates using Refer are highly intentional about finding the right fit for their careers, making them open to the costs associated with the service. Feedback from users like Arjun Bakhale, who secured an internship through a direct introduction to a startup CEO, highlights the value of personal connections made possible by Refer. Liu, reflecting on his experience, stated he would consider using the platform again, hoping for more companies to join in the future. He emphasized the advantage of having direct introductions, which often provide a level of access that traditional job applications do not. As Refer continues to grow and evolve, its founders aim to reshape the job search experience, making it more effective and personalized for tech professionals everywhere.
