Better’s new ChatGPT app targets mortgage lenders Rocket and UWM

The online mortgage platform Better has joined forces with OpenAI to unveil an innovative app integrated within ChatGPT. This collaboration aims to significantly streamline the mortgage and home equity loan underwriting process, as reported by CNBC. Set to be officially announced later today, the app leverages Better's mortgage technology combined with OpenAI's advanced models. This powerful combination promises to transform the way loan officers at banks, mortgage brokers, and fintech companies operate, reducing the average underwriting time from 21 days to as little as 47 seconds, according to Better's CEO, Vishal Garg. Giancarlo Lionetti, OpenAI's Chief Commercial Officer, emphasized the impact of this collaboration, stating, "Transforming the mortgage underwriting process via ChatGPT is a monumental step forward for everyone involved." He expressed pride in partnering with Better to create technology that promises to revolutionize the mortgage sector, making it more affordable and efficient for American families seeking home financing. Historically, the mortgage process has been a lengthy and complex endeavor, with lenders navigating numerous steps that can stretch over weeks. Following the 2008 financial crisis, traditional banks like JPMorgan Chase scaled back their involvement in the mortgage market, paving the way for non-bank entities like Rocket Mortgage and United Wholesale Mortgage to gain prominence. In a landscape where leading AI companies are focused on eliminating inefficiencies, Better's new app is set to reshape the U.S. home loan market, which generates over $1 trillion in mortgages annually. Garg noted that this initiative marks a shift for Better, moving from a consumer-focused lender to a tech-driven "mortgage-as-a-service" platform for other industry players. By enhancing speed and efficiency, the app directly challenges established mortgage giants, enabling competitors to operate more rapidly. Better claims that lenders could save an average of 21 days during the underwriting process, ultimately reducing costs and benefiting consumers. Garg highlighted the financial implications, stating, "AI is now handling mortgages. Large public companies like Rocket and UWM generate substantial revenue by imposing a tax of one and a half percent on mortgage underwriting, costing the American public around $20 billion annually." The technology behind this app utilizes OpenAI's models, which analyze Better's mortgage data to perform multiple workflows simultaneously on various checkpoints, including appraisals, title reports, income verification, credit reports, and other metrics. Garg explained, "This is not just a simple tool; it’s a comprehensive system with a complex logic framework and extensive context capabilities."
