In a move that highlights the growing importance of software in various industries, Quilt, a startup specializing in heat pumps, has announced a significant over-the-air update that enhances the performance of its units already installed in homes. Unlike traditional HVAC systems, which typically require physical adjustments only when issues arise, Quilt is pioneering a model that embraces continuous improvement through software updates. Quilt CEO Paul Lambert emphasized the company's vision from the outset: to create HVAC systems that could be regularly updated, similar to advancements seen in electric vehicles. He noted, "In cars, they refer to it as software-defined vehicles. We feel like we’ve created software-defined HVAC.” This innovative approach is a departure from the norm in the HVAC industry, where updates are rarely seen. The update, which was rolled out last week, dramatically increases the heating and cooling capacities of the heat pumps by over 20%. This improvement was made possible due to Quilt's commitment to integrating high-quality sensors and networking capabilities into their systems. Engineer Isaac McQuillen, who previously worked at Lucid Motors, led the initiative after feedback indicated that some customers needed greater capacity for larger living spaces. By utilizing advanced sensors that monitor various parameters, Quilt was able to push the limits of their heat pumps. Originally, their outdoor units delivered 19,700 BTUs of cooling and 20,500 BTUs of heating per hour. Following the update, these figures have surged to 24,000 BTUs for cooling and 25,200 BTUs for heating. While the efficiency of the units remains unchanged, this enhancement allows them to perform better in extreme weather conditions. However, this innovative update comes at a cost. The integration of high-quality sensors and networking equipment increased the initial material expenses. Regardless, Quilt believes that the value derived from improved performance and customer satisfaction far outweighs these costs. Lambert noted the challenge lies in seamlessly integrating software with hardware, but the outcome allows for broader market reach without necessitating entirely new models. As Quilt continues to redefine the HVAC landscape, this breakthrough serves as a testament to the transformative potential of software in enhancing everyday technologies.
