Runway CEO says AI could help Hollywood make 50 films instead of one $100M blockbuster

Cristóbal Valenzuela, co-founder and CEO of the AI video-generation startup Runway, which has recently surpassed a valuation of $5 billion, is stirring debate in the film industry with his ambitious vision for artificial intelligence in Hollywood. Speaking at Semafor’s World Economy Summit, Valenzuela proposed a radical shift in how studios allocate their budgets for film production. Instead of investing approximately $100 million into a single blockbuster, he suggests that studios could distribute that same amount across 50 different films. "If you’re spending a hundred million dollars on making one feature film, which is 90 minutes long, imagine taking that same budget and creating 50 movies, all of comparable quality and visual output," Valenzuela articulated. This strategy, he believes, would significantly enhance the likelihood of producing successful films by increasing the overall volume of content. Valenzuela's remarks challenge the traditional notion that cinema is purely an art form, suggesting instead that AI could transform the industry into a numbers game where greater quantity leads to greater success. While he acknowledges the controversy surrounding AI's role in creative fields, he argues that the landscape is evolving rapidly. He perceives much of the initial skepticism towards AI as stemming from fear and misunderstanding, asserting that many now recognize the capabilities of these advanced tools. Runway is already engaged with various studios and creators, and according to Valenzuela, their technology is effectively lowering production costs. A prime example is the upcoming film "Bitcoin: Killing Satoshi," which is set to be the first studio-quality AI-generated feature and has seen its budget slashed from an estimated $300 million to $70 million due to AI integration. Major players in the industry, including Amazon and Sony Pictures, are exploring AI-driven solutions to curb production expenses, while even renowned director James Cameron has endorsed the technology as a means to sustain blockbuster production without job losses. Valenzuela emphasizes that AI is impacting all facets of filmmaking, from pre-production to visual effects, and it is already being adopted on a large scale. Despite the optimism surrounding AI's potential to enhance content production, critics argue that simply increasing output does not guarantee artistic quality. Valenzuela, however, remains resolute in his belief that the film industry is experiencing a creativity crisis driven by economic factors. He draws a parallel between film production and the publishing industry, which sees millions of books released annually, suggesting that a broader range of voices will ultimately enrich storytelling. He states, "We have this internal saying at Runway that the best movies are yet to be made because we haven’t heard from probably billions of people who haven’t had access to this technology." Valenzuela’s vision for the future of Hollywood hinges on the belief that AI can democratize filmmaking, enabling a flood of diverse content that could reshape the landscape of cinema.
