How AI could speed up the release of video games like Grand Theft Auto 6

Gamers have long awaited the arrival of Grand Theft Auto 6, a title that is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated video games in history. Recent insights suggest that artificial intelligence could play a pivotal role in expediting its development. Jack Buser, the Global Director for Games at Google Cloud, emphasized the timely significance of AI in the gaming sector during a recent appearance on the "Strictly Business" podcast. He remarked on how AI could facilitate the faster release of innovative games, stating, "We’re just very fortunate that AI has arrived on the scene at a time when the games industry really needs it more than ever before." The gaming industry has faced challenges, including layoffs and a decline in activity following the pandemic. However, a report from Boston Consulting Group predicts that industry revenues could soar to $266 billion by 2028, significantly aided by the integration of AI technologies. Major companies like Ubisoft and King are already harnessing the power of AI to enhance their operations. Buser noted that one of AI's most promising implications is its capability to shorten the development timeline from concept to release. He stated, "It is not unusual to find video games that take years and years and years and years to develop. Some take a decade to develop. It’s wild how long it can take to develop a video game." He pointed out that the lengthy development process is often due to what is known as iteration time, which can be significantly reduced with AI. "With AI, you’re able to actually get your ideas into the game much more quickly. You’re able to accelerate that iteration loop," he explained. What excites Buser most is the potential for AI to enhance gameplay itself. He described how AI can foster entirely new gaming experiences, moving beyond traditional development and analytics. A notable example he mentioned is the evolution of non-player characters (NPCs). Historically, NPCs have relied on scripted responses, limiting interactions to a few predetermined choices. With advanced AI, however, NPCs could engage in natural language conversations, making interactions feel more organic and lifelike. "You can talk to a player in the game, they stay within character, and you’re actually having an ongoing dialogue with them as if it’s another human being, but it’s not," Buser said. This advancement could dramatically change how players experience video games, ushering in a new era of interactive storytelling and gameplay.
