How a new Amazon-backed Hollywood production startup deploys AI for speed and cost-cutting

In an era where Hollywood grapples with the dual pressures of job security and rising production costs, a groundbreaking hybrid production studio has emerged, leveraging advanced AI technologies. Innovative Dreams, a new entity supported by Amazon Web Services and the generative AI firm Luma, is pioneering a fresh approach to filmmaking by integrating state-of-the-art AI tools across all phases—from pre-production to shooting and post-production. This innovative studio combines traditional filmmaking methods with modern technology, utilizing a massive LED wall and motion capture alongside AI-driven tools such as Luma, Google's Nano Banana, and Bytedance's SeeDream. According to CEO Jon Erwin, their approach enables significant reductions in both time and budget. "We visually design and explore the world, then take the footage we filmed and map that performance capture to these digital assets," Erwin explained. "It's a fusion of live-action performance with digital elements, ensuring the authenticity of the actor's performance remains intact." Innovative Dreams was conceived from Erwin's previous venture, Wonder Project, where he successfully employed AI to recreate historical scenes for the show “House of David,” available on Amazon Prime Video. With this new venture, Erwin is committed to harnessing the capabilities of AI and virtual production to generate large-scale films and series without needing to leave a soundstage, all while maintaining production within Southern California. The inaugural project utilizing this cutting-edge workflow is a three-part series titled “The Old Stories: Moses,” featuring Ben Kingsley, set to premiere this spring. Remarkably, the series was filmed in just one week on a virtual soundstage, showcasing actors across 40 different locations, achieved by projecting global footage onto screens within the production facility. This method, Erwin notes, would have traditionally required five to six weeks of shooting, along with a budget that may not have allowed for such extensive location work. To support the massive computing demands of AI video generation, Innovative Dreams partnered with AWS, which provides the necessary cloud and AI infrastructure. Samira Bakhtiar, general manager at AWS, emphasized the transformative potential of their tools, stating, "We're equipping filmmakers with the capabilities to produce content far more efficiently and collaboratively than before." Luma, valued at over $4 billion, also plays a critical role as an investor and partner, offering a new agent tool that consolidates various AI generation services into a collaborative workspace. Erwin highlighted the importance of their feedback loop with Luma in shaping the tools essential for their productions. However, the integration of AI into the industry raises concerns regarding job security, particularly for costumers, set designers, and makeup artists. The entertainment industry has already faced significant job losses, with over 40,000 positions eliminated in Los Angeles County since 2022, compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic and recent strikes by writers and actors. Entertainment attorney Jonathan Handel noted that the industry has been under severe strain, with production activity plummeting to levels not seen since 1995. As the guilds negotiate with studios, fears about AI undermining intellectual property and job security remain prevalent. "The potential for job displacement versus job enhancement is still an ongoing debate, and it makes many uneasy," Handel remarked. Despite these challenges, Erwin remains optimistic about AI's role in revitalizing the industry. He believes that the hybrid production techniques employed by Innovative Dreams can help revive opportunities in Los Angeles, stating, "We’re developing a method that addresses an unsustainable situation in our industry." While he acknowledges that AI may reshape entry-level positions, he is confident that skilled workers will adapt to this new landscape, ensuring the industry's survival and growth.
