OpenAI, Reliance partner to add AI search to JioHotstar

OpenAI is teaming up with Reliance to introduce an AI-driven conversational search feature for JioHotstar, the Indian streaming service. This innovative addition will enable users to find movies, TV shows, and live sports by utilizing both text and voice queries in various languages. The system will also provide tailored recommendations based on individual viewing habits and preferences. This collaboration marks a significant expansion of OpenAI’s presence in India, where they already have over 100 million weekly users of ChatGPT. Plans are underway to establish offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru later this year, complementing their existing facility in New Delhi. The announcement was made during the India AI Impact Summit held in New Delhi, where OpenAI CEO Sam Altman shared the stage with tech leaders such as Dario Amodei from Anthropic and Sundar Pichai of Google. In addition to enhancing JioHotstar, the partnership aims to integrate recommendations directly within ChatGPT, allowing users to receive contextual entertainment suggestions and links to the platform’s offerings. As streaming services increasingly explore conversational interfaces, this partnership sets a new standard. Netflix recently noted its testing of a similar AI search experience powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT, while Google introduced Gemini-based discovery features for its Google TV platform. Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s chief executive of applications, highlighted that this collaboration seeks to deliver more personalized AI experiences in entertainment and live sports, facilitating a seamless transition from curiosity to context through natural dialogue. Uday Shankar, vice chairperson of JioStar, emphasized that integrating AI into content discovery is poised to transform how audiences connect with programming. The rollout of these features will encompass both live and on-demand content. This initiative is part of OpenAI’s broader strategy, termed ‘OpenAI for India,’ which aims to strengthen its foothold in the region by establishing partnerships across infrastructure, enterprise solutions, and educational endeavors. Collaborations with major Indian corporations like the Tata Group, along with agreements with companies such as Pine Labs, Eternal, and MakeMyTrip, further underline this commitment.
