The concept of harnessing an electric vehicle's battery to transfer power back to the electrical grid has been in development for some time. The technology, known as vehicle-to-grid (V2G), first gained attention back in 2009 when Ford collaborated with American Electric Power in Ohio to explore its potential, albeit with hybrid vehicles rather than fully electric ones. Following this, General Motors experimented with similar initiatives using the plug-in hybrid Volt. As advancements continued, battery electric vehicles equipped with larger lithium-ion batteries began participating in these programs, primarily focused on commercial fleets. However, the landscape has recently shifted with the introduction of EVs specifically designed for bidirectional charging. Since July, Ford F-150 Lightning owners have started to send stored energy back to the grid during peak hours on weekdays, reaping financial benefits in the process. Sunrun, a company specializing in home energy storage and solar solutions, has been collaborating with Baltimore Gas and Electric Company since last year. This summer marked a significant milestone with the launch of the nation's first residential V2G pilot, involving three Lightning owners who are utilizing Sunrun and Ford's Home Integration System. Participants in this groundbreaking program can potentially earn up to $1,000, with the pilot running until the end of this month.
