Arcturus could halve the grid’s electrical losses using its nano-infused copper

The demand for copper is skyrocketing due to the ongoing energy transition and the increasing number of data centers. A recent study predicts that by 2050, the world will need to produce more copper than has been mined throughout all of history. Much of this copper is destined for the aging electrical grid in the U.S., which is now under significant stress. Amir Mashal, the founder and CEO of Arcturus, highlighted the challenges facing the grid, stating, "We’re hitting this inflection point of AI and the electrification of nearly every industry, which is overburdening the energy grid." Instead of simply increasing copper usage, Arcturus proposes a revolutionary alternative. The startup has developed a method to reduce energy loss in electrical conductors by infusing carbon nanomaterials into copper and aluminum using lasers. This innovative material could potentially halve the energy losses in electrical grids, allowing power lines of the same size to transport more electricity. In practical terms, this could result in an immediate average increase of 3% in electricity availability, and up to 10% during peak demand periods, equating to about a year’s worth of growth in U.S. energy demand. Mashal explained, "Copper loses conductivity as it heats up, leading to wasted energy, and our material can address this issue." While Arcturus aims to revolutionize the electrical grid, the company is initially focusing on applications in drones, robotics, and data centers, where even slight improvements in energy efficiency can have a significant impact. Recently, Arcturus secured $8 million in seed funding led by Initialized Capital, with contributions from Toyota Ventures and others. Currently, Mashal is perfecting his materials in a garage in Malibu, California, producing several centimeters of wire as proof of concept. The new funding will enable the company to scale production to tens of meters, allowing for testing in various critical applications such as electric motor windings and power distribution busbars. The materials are designed to serve as a “drop-in replacement” for existing copper and aluminum products, requiring no redesign or retraining for users. This could lead to lighter drones, more efficient electric vehicles, and reduced cooling needs for data centers. Mashal concluded, "These materials can fundamentally disrupt several industries facing similar energy bottlenecks, enhancing everything from drone flight times to graphics card performance."
