‘IT, BPO services will disappear in the next 5 yrs’: Vinod Khosla on how Indian job landscape could change

In a recent interview, tech mogul and venture capitalist Vinod Khosla expressed his belief that traditional sectors like IT and BPO are on the brink of obsolescence, primarily due to the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence. Khosla highlighted that the integration of AI may not only transform job landscapes but could also help mitigate inflation. Discussing the future of employment in India, Khosla emphasized that the country's young workforce, numbering around 250 million, should pivot towards developing and selling AI-driven products and services rather than relying on outdated IT services. He projected that within the next decade and a half, India could emerge as a leading exporter of AI innovations, fundamentally reshaping its economic opportunities. Khosla warned that the focus on job creation in traditional sectors may be misplaced. "IT and BPO services will almost certainly vanish within the next five years. We cannot overlook this reality," he stated. He elaborated on the capabilities of AI, predicting that it will soon perform tasks traditionally done by professionals such as accountants, physicians, and even therapists. Moreover, Khosla pointed out that robotics represents the next significant technological wave, poised to take over a wide range of jobs, from household chores to assembly line work. He believes that in a short span of five years, robots will mature to a point where they can effectively handle these roles, drastically reducing labor costs. With robotic labor priced at significantly lower rates compared to human workers, Khosla anticipates a shift towards a deflationary economy by 2035, suggesting that this technological shift will lead to a dramatic decrease in operational costs and, in turn, inflation rates. The implications for the job market are profound, as Khosla foresees a future where economic dynamics are fundamentally altered by AI and robotics.
