In an innovative leap for email management, a new mobile application named Avec offers users a fresh way to navigate their inboxes through a Tinder-like swiping mechanism. Initially launched on iOS, this app introduces swipe cards that streamline email handling. Users can swipe left to postpone emails for later attention or swipe right to archive them. Avec also integrates voice functionality, allowing users to respond to emails by simply speaking. By pressing and holding a button at the bottom of the card stack, users can dictate their replies. Once they release the button, the app transcribes the spoken words into a draft, which can be reviewed and edited before sending. Unlike existing tools that require separate keyboard installations, Avec leverages full email context, enhancing its ability to understand names and improve tone-based edits. The app's design is focused on personalizing user experience. By swiping down on unnecessary emails, the app learns user preferences for categorizing unimportant messages, helping to declutter inboxes efficiently. While the card interface stands out as a unique feature, Avec also offers a traditional list view for users who prefer a classic layout. Jonathan Unikowksi, the founder of Avec and a former product engineer at Replit, saw the need for a more effective email tool, especially in a domain that has seen little change over the last 25 years. He noted that Gmail marked the last significant transformation in email management and expressed a desire to enhance this vital part of everyday life through innovative design and AI capabilities. With the market already featuring alternatives like Superhuman, Shortwave, and Spike, Unikowksi acknowledged the competitive landscape but remains optimistic about his product's potential. He believes that mobile devices, where users frequently check emails, create a unique environment that fosters creativity despite their limitations. Currently, Avec is available for free to Gmail users in the U.S., with plans to support Outlook in the future. While the app is free for now, Unikowksi hinted at the possibility of introducing premium features down the line. The company has successfully raised $8.4 million from prominent investors, including Lightspeed and Haystack, alongside notable individuals such as Replit CEO Amjad Massad and Behance co-founder Scott Belsky.
