First look: Also’s upcoming e-bike disconnects the pedals and wheels

The world of e-bikes is evolving, challenging traditional cycling norms where pedaling directly translates to wheel movement. With the introduction of throttles, riders can pedal less frequently, while mid-drive motors integrate pedaling force with motor output, complicating the straightforward connection between rider and bike. Enter Also, an innovative electric bicycle startup that aims to completely redefine this relationship. In Also’s latest model, pedaling generates electricity for a motor rather than turning the wheels directly. This process involves a generator that harnesses the rider's power, supplemented by battery energy, to drive the bike forward. The experience of riding this e-bike is primarily shaped by advanced software that adjusts crank resistance and translates pedaling force into motor assistance. Also claims that this technology can make the ride feel almost indistinguishable from that of a conventional bicycle. Recently, Ars experienced a test ride on a pre-production version of Also's inaugural model, the TM-B, and spoke with the team behind its development. While a comprehensive review is forthcoming, initial impressions suggest that Also successfully fulfills its promise. Most of the time, riders will feel as if they are on a traditional bike; however, when pushed, the e-bike transforms into a uniquely enhanced riding experience. Located near Rivian, the well-known electric vehicle manufacturer, Also operates in a facility characterized by bike prototypes and development components, clearly distinguishing itself from the automotive world. Saul Leiken, the director of product line at Also, noted some shared technology, such as the battery cells derived from Rivian products, albeit in a less dense format. Nonetheless, the conceptual framework of the bike appears to be where the most significant overlap lies.
