A married founder duo’s company, 14.ai, is replacing customer support teams at startups

The landscape of customer service is undergoing a significant transformation, largely influenced by advancements in artificial intelligence. While the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) sector faces challenges, innovative startups like Decagon, Parloa, and Sierra are securing substantial investments, reflecting a shift towards AI-driven solutions. Among these trailblazers is 14.ai, a startup backed by Y Combinator, which has developed a unique AI-native approach to customer support. Having successfully raised $3 million in seed funding, with contributions from notable investors including General Catalyst and tech founders from Dropbox and Slack, 14.ai is redefining how customer service is managed. Founded by the married duo of Marie Schneegans and Michael Fester, who met in Paris over a decade ago, 14.ai was born from their ambition to create a company together. Each had previously established their own ventures—Schneegans with Workwell and Fester with Snips, which was acquired by Sonos in 2019. They decided to focus on customer service, opting not to create a traditional SaaS product but instead launching an AI-powered agency. "We don’t just provide software; we are an AI-native customer service agency that integrates software and services into one solution," Fester explains. The startup can seamlessly integrate with existing support systems within a day, quickly addressing backlog issues across multiple channels such as email, calls, chat, TikTok, and WhatsApp. One notable case involved a men’s health supplement brand, Sperm Worms, which faced significant ticket backlogs. After stepping in, 14.ai cleared the entire backlog in just one day, showcasing their efficiency. Presently, the company operates with a small team of six, who are dedicated to providing round-the-clock support. With the recent funding, 14.ai plans to expand its workforce over the next six months, focusing exclusively on hiring AI engineers. The startup is committed to automating customer support workflows and enhancing revenue growth insights, positioning itself as a vital resource for businesses. Fester emphasizes that 14.ai aims to alleviate three main burdens from startups: ticketing systems, AI software add-ons, and labor costs. Their diverse clientele includes luxury skincare brand Yon-KA and innovative lighting company Creative Lighting. To further enhance its offerings, 14.ai is experimenting with its own product, GloGlo, a glucose gummies brand aimed at Type 1 diabetics, operating primarily through AI. Tom Blomfield, a partner at Y Combinator, believes 14.ai successfully balances AI and human involvement in customer service, pointing out that with proper integration, AI can tackle up to 60% of tasks autonomously. As the role of AI evolves within customer service, 14.ai is set to adapt and lead in this dynamic environment, effectively managing the delicate balance between technology and human interaction. Y Combinator has recognized the potential of AI-driven agencies, making them a focal point in their future startup requests.
