McKinsey consultants are using AI to end their dependence on PowerPoint

In a significant transformation within the consulting industry, McKinsey & Company is reducing its reliance on PowerPoint by integrating artificial intelligence into its project management processes. Kate Smaje, McKinsey's Global Leader for technology and AI, highlighted a notable decrease in PowerPoint usage among consultants, attributing this shift to the implementation of AI tools that enhance collaboration and efficiency. Traditionally, consultants have relied heavily on slide decks for both client presentations and project management. However, an innovative approach has emerged, led by engagement manager Louis-Charles Généreux, who developed a centralized AI-assisted website known as the 'client visualization hub.' This platform serves as a dynamic project hub for his current engagement with a North American cable provider, facilitating real-time updates for a team of around 70 individuals. Généreux’s initiative addresses common challenges associated with version control and information accessibility that often plague traditional slide deck methods. Previously, team members faced confusion stemming from multiple versions of presentations circulating via email, which led to misunderstandings and inefficiencies. The new website provides a structured, searchable interface that ensures all team members have access to the most current information. By utilizing Platform McKinsey, the firm's internal resource for approved tools, Généreux was able to create this website securely. The team harnessed AI to compile a wealth of content, including analyses and visual data, into interactive web pages. This setup not only enhances the clarity of communication among engineers, product owners, and senior executives but also saves valuable time. While PowerPoint remains in use, it has evolved into a tool for final presentations rather than the primary workspace for consultants. The integration of AI allows consultants to focus on deeper analysis and critical thinking rather than getting bogged down in traditional slide creation. The shift towards AI in consulting is not an isolated trend. Major firms like McKinsey, BCG, Deloitte, and IBM are at the forefront of this AI revolution, advising clients on how to adopt AI technologies while simultaneously reengineering their internal workflows. This movement raises important considerations regarding consulting pricing, talent management, and the evolving nature of value creation in the industry. As the role of AI expands, McKinsey's headcount reflects this change, with a notable increase in AI agents complementing the human workforce. Smaje emphasized that AI has become integral to McKinsey's operations, enhancing the speed and efficiency of problem-solving processes. Ultimately, this AI integration allows consultants to arrive at preliminary conclusions much faster, transitioning from a week-long research cycle to an immediate analysis. This newfound efficiency enables teams to dedicate time to exploring innovative ideas and solutions through regular brainstorming sessions, further enriching the consulting process.
