Cursor is rolling out a new kind of agentic coding tool

The landscape of software engineering is rapidly evolving, and with the rise of agentic coding, it has become increasingly intricate. Developers now juggle multiple coding agents, each managing various processes simultaneously. To tackle this complexity, Cursor has introduced a groundbreaking tool named Automations, designed to simplify the coding environment for developers. Launched recently, Automations allows users to initiate coding agents automatically based on various triggers, such as new additions to the codebase, messages on Slack, or even set timers. This innovation aims to alleviate the burden of manually overseeing numerous agents, enabling engineers to focus on higher-level tasks rather than the minutiae of coding management. Jonas Nelle, the engineering chief at Cursor, emphasized that while human intervention remains vital, this new system shifts the role of engineers from being constant initiators to participants at critical junctures. The approach is encapsulated in their existing feature, Bugbot, which automatically detects issues in the code whenever an update is made, paving the way for more comprehensive security audits through the new Automations framework. Josh Ma, the engineering lead, highlighted the value of this approach, stating that investing more effort through Automations to identify complex issues has proven beneficial. Cursor's system boasts the capability of executing hundreds of automations each hour, going beyond mere code reviews to include incident response functionalities. For instance, issues flagged by PagerDuty can trigger an agent to analyze server logs instantly, enhancing the responsiveness of the development process. Additionally, Automations provide weekly summaries of code changes directly through the company's Slack channel, ensuring that teams remain updated without extra effort. Nelle noted that while human oversight is still essential, automating these processes transforms how tasks are executed, allowing for greater efficiency and innovation in coding practices. As the competition in the agentic coding market intensifies, with major players like OpenAI and Anthropic enhancing their tools, Cursor has maintained a steady market share of around 25% among generative AI clients. Notably, Cursor's revenue trajectory has been remarkable, recently surpassing $2 billion annually, doubling in just three months, reflecting the growing demand for advanced coding solutions.
