Claude Code's creator says his setup involves thousands of AI sub-agents doing 'deeper work' overnight

In a recent conversation with Sequoia Capital, Boris Cherny, an engineer at Anthropic, revealed an innovative approach to coding that incorporates thousands of AI agents working autonomously during the night. Cherny, the mastermind behind Claude Code, shared insights into his unique workflow, showcasing the evolving role of AI in software development. During the interview, he demonstrated how he utilizes the Claude app, which features a code tab where he maintains several coding sessions. "Typically, I run about five to ten sessions at a time, each populated with multiple agents," Cherny explained, emphasizing the efficiency of his overnight operations. "Usually, every night, I have a few thousand agents engaged in deeper tasks," he added, highlighting the potential for AI to function as persistent coding assistants. Cherny attributes much of his productivity to two key features within Claude Code: /loops and Routines. These tools allow users to automate tasks effectively, with /loops being scheduled locally, while Routines execute recurring tasks on a server. This means that coding efforts can continue seamlessly even after engineers shut down their laptops. "It's just the coolest thing," Cherny stated, encouraging others to explore these features. This isn't the first time Cherny has discussed his AI setup. Back in January, he referred to his method as "surprisingly vanilla" in a post on X, which has since garnered significant attention, amassing over 104,000 saves and 8.1 million views. "I didn't realize it would be surprising for anyone; it’s just how I code," he remarked, reflecting on the unexpected interest in his straightforward approach to utilizing AI in coding. Although Anthropic has not responded to inquiries for further comments, Cherny's insights are paving the way for a new paradigm in the programming landscape.
