This new tracking label could help solve cargo theft

In a scenario reminiscent of a heist thriller, imagine a situation where 24,000 bottles of tequila mysteriously disappear. This is a reality that many in the shipping and logistics industry face as global cargo theft becomes increasingly sophisticated. With cargo often going dark between ports and distribution centers, companies are seeking innovative solutions. Enter Samsara, a fleet management company that has unveiled a groundbreaking solution: the Samsara Tracking Label. This compact, business-card-sized sticky label is equipped with a small zinc battery and Bluetooth low energy technology, allowing it to connect with Samsara's extensive network of devices. This means real-time location tracking in a disposable format. Samsara has been in the asset tracking game for years, but their previous products were often bulky and costly. David Gal, Samsara’s vice president of connected equipment, shared insights about customer feedback driving the development of the Tracking Label. Customers expressed a need for a small, real-time tracking solution that could be easily mounted on various types of equipment. Before the Tracking Label, Samsara introduced the Asset Tag, which provided real-time visibility but was too large and expensive for widespread use. The new Tracking Label addresses these concerns with its discreet design and cost-effectiveness, making it suitable for a broader range of shipments. The true innovation lies in leveraging Samsara's existing network of cameras and sensors, creating a robust Bluetooth network for precise tracking. This technology not only enhances visibility but also opens up new business avenues, as seen with their recent AI-powered tool, Ground Intelligence, designed to identify hazards in real-time. As the shipping and logistics sectors grapple with uncertainty, the Samsara Tracking Label offers a beacon of hope. Customers will initially receive the labels in sleep mode, capable of lasting up to nine months before activation. Once activated, the Bluetooth functionality can run for approximately 45 days, and the label is designed for easy disposal, avoiding complications linked to traditional lithium batteries. Gal believes that the Tracking Label will primarily benefit large companies involved in critical shipments. Its real-time tracking capability empowers businesses to respond proactively to delays or rerouted shipments, fundamentally shifting the approach from reactive to proactive decisions. Samsara is not alone in its quest to improve shipment visibility; UPS has also announced plans to implement RFID sensors for real-time tracking. However, Gal argues that RFID technology has limitations, particularly if packages stray too far from scanners. In contrast, the Tracking Label's integration into a dynamic network of sensors positions it as a more effective solution for tracking lost or stolen cargo. With the potential to significantly impact cargo theft, Gal optimistically stated, "I have a feeling that we’ll bust some crime rings with this." The Samsara Tracking Label represents a significant step forward in cargo security, providing companies with the tools needed to enhance their logistics operations.
