GM says AI helps visualize a car before it exists — and speed up how it gets built

General Motors is redefining the automotive design landscape by integrating artificial intelligence into a traditionally human-centric field. While many automakers have primarily used AI to enhance manufacturing processes and supply chains, GM is now leveraging this technology to streamline the creative side of vehicle design. The automaker's generative AI tools are seamlessly woven into the design workflow, allowing for rapid transformations of hand-drawn sketches into dynamic concept videos, proposing design modifications, and even conducting early aerodynamic tests. This innovation promises to significantly shorten the design timeline, a crucial factor in an industry where creating a new vehicle can take five to seven years, especially amid challenges like supply chain disruptions and competitive pressures from emerging EV manufacturers. Dan Shapiro, a creative designer at GM, emphasizes the collaboration between human ingenuity and AI, stating, "Human creativity sets the vision. AI helps us see it sooner." The initial steps of car design still involve traditional methods, but AI accelerates the realization of these visions. Through collaboration with AI startup Discom, GM has developed software capable of converting sketches from various perspectives into comprehensive 360-degree models of vehicles. This allows for rapid generation of visual variations, camera simulations, and short animations that illustrate how a car might move in real-life scenarios. Previously, the journey from design sketch to high-quality animation could take months, often requiring teams to collaborate extensively. Now, this process has been reduced to less than a day, according to Shapiro. Furthermore, GM is tackling one of the most labor-intensive aspects of vehicle development—aerodynamic testing. Traditionally based on complex fluid dynamics simulations, these tests can be slow and laborious. However, GM's innovative AI-driven "virtual wind tunnel" can provide aerodynamic drag estimates in real time. Rene Strauss, GM's director of virtual integration engineering, highlights this advancement: "It used to take about two weeks for us to do a full cycle of this design and engineering iteration. Now, what we're looking at is instant." This means that design adjustments, such as altering a windshield angle, can yield updated drag estimates in just over a minute. The AI also plays a role in enhancing vehicle interiors, with machine-learning tools suggesting new designs to minimize cabin vibrations, demonstrating the far-reaching impact of AI on vehicle development. Despite the increasing reliance on AI, GM is committed to ensuring that the technology serves as a supportive tool rather than a substitute for human designers. Brian Styles, GM's global director of design innovation and technology operations, articulates the company's philosophy: "It really is about getting to a holistic, integrated, AI-enabled workflow from beginning to end." As GM continues to harness AI's potential, the focus remains on minimizing handoffs between different stages of the design process, ultimately leading to a more efficient transition from concept to production. With internal goals set for reducing development timelines, GM executives acknowledge the critical importance of adapting to the rapid evolution of AI. "We've been super focused on how we can most effectively ride this coming wave of AI," Styles asserts, recognizing that without a clear strategy, the company risks being overwhelmed by the accelerating pace of technological change.
