How robotic beehives use AI to protect bees from climate change

Bees play an essential role in maintaining our food supply, yet their populations are facing a severe crisis. According to Beewise, a California-based startup, over 40% of bee colonies collapse each year, significantly impacting the pollination of more than one-third of the crops we consume. Climate change, highlighted by intensified hurricanes, increased wildfires, and heightened pesticide usage, is a major factor in this decline. Traditional wooden beehives, which have been in use since the mid-19th century, offer little protection and support for the bees. In response, Beewise is transforming conventional beekeeping with their innovative solution: the BeeHome. This robotic beehive, powered by artificial intelligence, is available for rent to growers. Saar Safra, the CEO of Beewise, explains that the BeeHome retains compatibility with traditional beehive structures, utilizing the same frames and bees. The system is equipped with cameras that provide real-time monitoring of the bee population, connecting to AI software that assesses and addresses their individual needs. For instance, if food supplies are low, the robotic hive can automatically deliver nourishment to the bees. This system also manages medicine distribution and temperature regulation, ensuring the bees are safe from adverse weather conditions. Recent natural disasters, such as hurricanes Helene and Milton, have devastated thousands of commercial beehives in states like Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina. The BeeHome is competitively priced compared to traditional models and can effectively manage up to 10 hives, significantly reducing labor costs for growers. Future iterations of the BeeHome are projected to scale this capacity, attracting considerable interest from investors. John Caddedu, co-founder of Corner Ventures, anticipates that advancements will allow the BeeHome to manage 40 or more hives, enhancing profitability for users. Safra reports that the technology has led to a 70% decrease in bee colony loss and improved hive health, with thousands of units already deployed. Beewise has seen remarkable growth in revenue and customer acquisition, boasting a gross margin of 40%. With a total funding of $170 million from investors including Corner Ventures and Insight Partners, the future looks promising for this innovative approach to beekeeping.
