An antidote to fat, heavy cars? Check out these lightweighting awards.

The evolution of vehicle safety has come at a significant cost: increased weight. This challenge is particularly pronounced in electric vehicles, where the hefty battery packs often push the scales beyond 5,000 lbs (2,267 kg). To address this pressing issue, the Altair Enlighten award shines a spotlight on advancements in lightweighting and sustainability in the automotive sector. Presented annually by Altair, an AI company, in collaboration with the Center for Automotive Research, this award showcases innovative strategies that car manufacturers and suppliers are employing to reduce both weight and environmental impact in future vehicles. Lucid Motors made headlines by securing accolades in two distinct categories. The company earned the Sustainable Computing award for streamlining the car development process, enabling engineers to test design iterations directly within their existing CAD platforms, thus eliminating the need to switch tools. Additionally, Lucid was honored with the Responsible AI award for leveraging artificial intelligence to forecast crash test outcomes well ahead of producing physical prototypes. This foresight minimized unnecessary iterations and reduced material waste during testing. Meanwhile, the Future of Lightweighting award was awarded to Vortex CAE for their innovative holistic topometry-based optimizer designed for lightweight crash structures. Their cutting-edge 3D generative design technique achieved a remarkable 77 percent reduction in mass while still meeting or surpassing structural performance standards. If applied to mass-produced vehicles, this technology could lead to a 50 percent reduction in body weight, potentially saving over a million tons of CO2 emissions during manufacturing and cutting raw material costs by half a billion dollars. Magna also received recognition as a runner-up for its use of hemp nylon in vehicle exteriors, showcasing the potential of sustainable materials in automotive design.
