I flew on a startup's one-of-a-kind electric plane that could reshape air travel by 2027

The Alia CX300, an innovative electric aircraft by Vermont-based startup Beta Technologies, is set to redefine the future of aviation. After conducting successful real-life missions, this unique plane is designed to carry five passengers and a pilot, showcasing the potential for clean air travel. During a recent flight experience, we soared over Burlington at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour. Test pilot Chris "Pooter" Caputo demonstrated the aircraft's impressive maneuverability and energy management, providing breathtaking views of Lake Champlain and the Green Mountains below. The Alia CX300, characterized as a conventional takeoff and landing (cTOL) aircraft, aims to replace traditional small fuel-powered planes on short regional routes, promising a cleaner, quieter, and more cost-effective travel alternative. With orders already placed by carriers like Air New Zealand, the CX300 is gearing up for revenue-cargo flights later this year as part of a Transportation Department pilot program. Full certification is anticipated by late 2027. In addition to the CX300, Beta Technologies is also working on an electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, known as the Alia 250. This model will utilize similar technology as the CX300 but is designed for city commuting, taking off from vertiports. Beta's strategy stands apart from competitors like Joby Aviation and Archer Aviation, which are focusing primarily on eVTOL aircraft. Kyle Clark, Beta's president and CEO, emphasized the effectiveness of the company’s approach, stating that achieving cTOL certification lays a strong foundation for eVTOL certification. Despite these advancements, Beta faces significant challenges, particularly in establishing charging infrastructure, gaining further certification, and ensuring public acceptance, especially if projected savings do not equate to affordable ticket prices. The Alia CX300 is equipped with up to five battery packs, offering around 250 kWh of energy and a range of approximately 390 miles under optimal conditions. Safety features include redundancy in battery systems and independent power paths in the propulsion unit, which enhances reliability during flights. Although still awaiting full certification, the company has received special federal approvals to conduct demonstration flights. During the flight, Caputo demonstrated the aircraft's glide capabilities by cutting the engines at 1,300 feet, showing that the CX300 can safely descend to a suitable landing area even in the event of total power loss. The operational costs are promising, with electricity being cheaper than jet fuel, but the overall economics of passenger fares remain uncertain due to ongoing expenses like pilot salaries and maintenance. Beta has partnered with multiple airlines for real-world testing, having completed over 100 flights, including organ deliveries, across various airports. With over 4,000 public-use airports in the U.S. that are underserved by larger commercial jets, the Alia CX300 could provide essential connections for rural areas and leisure destinations. Beta Technologies envisions this aircraft eventually paving the way for eVTOL flying taxis, emphasizing their readiness to launch both cargo and passenger services in the near future.
