NeoLogic wants to build more energy-efficient CPUs for AI data centers

NeoLogic, a groundbreaking startup based in Israel, is on a mission to transform the landscape of AI data centers with its innovative energy-efficient CPUs. Founders Avi Messica and Ziv Leshem faced skepticism from industry experts who deemed their ambitions unfeasible. "Many told us that innovation in logic synthesis and circuit design was impossible due to the maturity of the field," Messica shared in an interview. Despite the doubts, the duo is determined to challenge the status quo. NeoLogic is developing a server CPU that simplifies logic processing, utilizing fewer transistors and logic gates. This approach aims to enhance speed while significantly reducing power consumption. Established in 2021, the company boasts a combined 50 years of experience in the semiconductor sector, with Leshem having an extensive background in chip design at major firms such as Intel and Synopsis. Messica, on the other hand, has specialized in circuit design and manufacturing. The founders' initiative is rooted in the decline of Moore's Law, the principle that the number of transistors on microchips doubles approximately every two years. Messica noted that about a decade ago, the industry shifted away from scaling down transistor sizes, leading to stagnation in advancements. However, NeoLogic remains undeterred. Currently, the startup is collaborating with two unnamed hyperscaler partners to design its server CPUs. The company anticipates unveiling a single-core test chip by year-end, with aspirations to deploy its CPUs in data centers by 2027. Recently, NeoLogic secured $10 million in a Series A funding round, led by KOMPAS VC and supported by M Ventures, Maniv Mobility, and lool Ventures. The funding will be pivotal for expanding their engineering team and furthering CPU development. This investment comes at a critical time, as data centers are under immense pressure from rising energy demands, especially with the ongoing AI surge projected to double power consumption within the next four years. Messica believes that the energy-saving capabilities of NeoLogic’s CPUs could make them indispensable to the market. He emphasized the broader implications of their technology, stating, “The potential energy savings can influence everything from the construction costs of next-generation data centers to water usage, ultimately impacting society as a whole. This vision has been our driving force for nearly five years.”
