Founders Fund, known for investing in transformative companies, has made a significant move by backing Halter, a startup from New Zealand that is pioneering solar-powered smart collars for cattle. Recently closing a $220 million Series E funding round at a valuation of $2 billion, Halter aims to tackle a pressing issue in agriculture: managing cattle across vast and often remote landscapes without traditional methods like dogs or motorbikes. Craig Piggott, the 30-year-old founder and CEO of Halter, has dedicated nearly a decade to developing this innovative solution. In a conversation with TechCrunch, he emphasized the importance of efficient land management in pasture-based farming. "Fences are crucial—they dictate where animals graze and how we can rest the land. The idea of virtual fencing just made sense," he stated. Halter's technology integrates a solar-powered collar, a network of low-frequency towers, and a smartphone application, allowing farmers to create virtual boundaries, monitor their cattle continuously, and manage herds without leaving their homes. Cattle are trained to respond to audio and vibration signals emitted by the collar, which Piggott compares to a car's beeping sound when getting close to an obstruction. Most animals adapt to this system quickly, often within three interactions. Beyond herding, the collar also monitors cattle health, tracks fertility cycles, and identifies sick animals, all while gathering extensive behavioral data. Piggott boasts that Halter has amassed what is likely the largest dataset on cattle behavior, leading to improvements in their products. Now in its fifth iteration of hardware, Halter's offering is currently in beta testing with U.S. customers. Hailing from a dairy farming background, Piggott's journey into technology began during a brief tenure at Rocket Lab, where he was inspired to merge agriculture with innovative technology. Starting Halter at just 21, he reflects on his initial naivety but acknowledges that this bold step has paid off, with Halter collars now used on over a million cattle across more than 2,000 farms in New Zealand, Australia, and the U.S. The financial benefits for farmers are clear: Halter's technology can enhance land productivity by up to 20%, resulting in significant output increases. Piggott notes, "In some cases, we see customers literally doubling the output off their land." The competition is heating up, with established players like Merck developing their own virtual fencing systems and new startups emerging with innovative concepts. However, Piggott remains confident, asserting that Halter's primary challenge lies not in technology competition but in changing the longstanding practices of farmers. He insists that the company’s commitment to reliability is what sets it apart—managing a large herd demands a robust system with high uptime to avoid any potential losses. As Halter continues to grow, it stands out in a sector where many agricultural tech startups have struggled. Piggott credits their success to a strong focus on financial returns from the outset. While the U.S. market is important, Piggott recognizes that agriculture is a global industry, with significant opportunities in South America and Europe still untapped. With only one million of the estimated one billion cattle worldwide currently using Halter collars, the company has much room for expansion and innovation ahead.
