New paper argues history, not mantle plume, powers Yellowstone

A recent study sheds new light on the geological forces that shaped North America, specifically focusing on the elusive Farallon plate. This tectonic plate, which has largely disappeared beneath the continent, played a pivotal role in the formation of the West Coast by colliding with island chains during its subduction. The research proposes that the remnants of the Farallon plate continue to influence geological activity far beyond the coast, particularly in the Yellowstone region. This hotspot, known for its explosive volcanic history, may owe its power to the stresses created by the plate's disappearance, which could have opened pathways for molten rock to surface. Hotspots are geological phenomena found worldwide where materials from deep within the Earth reach the surface, unassociated with tectonic plate boundaries. Traditionally, these hotspots are attributed to mantle plumes—columns of hot molten rock rising through the mantle. As tectonic plates drift over these plumes, they create chains of islands, each progressively older as they move away from the active hotspot. However, Yellowstone presents a unique case. Unlike typical hotspots that often form in oceanic regions with thinner crust, Yellowstone's volcanic activity is more akin to that of an oceanic hotspot. This has resulted in a series of significant eruptions across the Snake River Plain, culminating in the formation of the colossal calderas that characterize modern-day Yellowstone.
