This Samsung smartwatch can predict fainting minutes in advance: Study

In a groundbreaking clinical study conducted alongside Chung-Ang University Gwangmyeong Hospital in South Korea, Samsung has demonstrated that its Galaxy Watch 6 can accurately forecast instances of vasovagal syncope (VVS), a prevalent form of fainting. This achievement represents the first successful application of a commercial smartwatch to anticipate fainting episodes, with findings published in the European Heart Journal Digital Health. The research involved 132 patients exhibiting symptoms of VVS and was led by Professor Cho. Samsung noted that fainting can be triggered by factors such as stress, pain, fear, or intense emotions. While the condition itself is generally not life-threatening, a sudden fall following a fainting episode can result in significant injuries. During the study, researchers employed the Galaxy Watch 6’s photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor along with heart rate variability (HRV) data to conduct controlled medical assessments designed to induce fainting. An advanced AI algorithm analyzed this health data to identify warning signs, enabling predictions of potential fainting episodes up to five minutes in advance with an impressive accuracy rate of approximately 84.6%. Jongmin Choi, Head of Health R&D Group at Samsung Electronics' Mobile eXperience (MX) Business, remarked, “This study exemplifies how wearable technology can transition healthcare from a reactive model to one focused on preventive care.” He further emphasized the company's dedication to fostering technological advancements that empower users to maintain healthier lifestyles. While this innovation marks a significant milestone in health monitoring, Samsung has yet to confirm whether this predictive feature will extend to other models within the Galaxy Watch lineup. However, newer devices equipped with the necessary health sensors, such as PPG and HRV tracking, may potentially support this capability in the future. Samsung also stated its intention to enhance the health monitoring features of its wearable devices and to collaborate more closely with leading medical institutions. The company aims to spearhead advancements in the digital health sector and expedite the implementation of personalized, preventive health solutions.
