Firefighting drones head to Aspen—can they suppress a blaze before humans arrive?

A startup from the Bay Area has made a significant stride in wildfire management by securing its first customer— the Aspen Fire Protection District. Seneca, the company behind these innovative drones, recently announced that it will deploy a fleet of five unmanned aerial vehicles, referred to as a "strike team," to the renowned ski resort town of Aspen this summer. This development marks Aspen as the first wildfire agency in the United States to integrate such drones into their firefighting strategies. Each drone is engineered to deliver over 50 gallons of foam suppressant, which is crucial for slowing down the spread of wildfires. The technology aims to enable these drones to respond to small fires before human firefighters can arrive on the scene. Jake Andersen, the Aspen Fire Chief, explained the drones' role as an essential early suppression tool. "We have panoramic AI cameras that excel at quickly identifying fires. However, our challenge lies in the immediate response time. Fires can occur in remote areas, sometimes six to eight miles away. Each drone has a range of three to five miles, which could significantly enhance our capabilities," he stated. Founded in 2024, Seneca is part of a growing wave of "firetech" companies that are revolutionizing wildfire prevention and response measures. As wildfires continue to increase in frequency and severity across the nation, innovative solutions like these drones are becoming increasingly vital. The Colorado Division of Fire Prevention & Control has noted a dramatic shift in wildfire seasons, with the average core season now lasting 78 days longer than it did in the 1970s, leading to large fires being reported every month throughout the year.
