Severed sea cucumber appendages don’t seem to die

In a groundbreaking finding, researchers have unveiled that certain tissues from the sea cucumber species Psolus fabricii can remain alive indefinitely when placed in regular seawater. This challenges the conventional understanding of tissue decay, which typically sees organs and appendages deteriorate rapidly after being separated from their host. Sara Jobson, a leading researcher at Memorial University of Newfoundland, described this phenomenon as 'naturally occurring tissue immortality.' She emphasized the significance of this discovery, noting, 'Having tissues that survive that easily is unheard of. We’ve never seen anything like this.' Psolus fabricii, found in the cold waters of the Atlantic and Arctic oceans, is equipped with a soft underside lined with tube feet, allowing it to cling to rocky surfaces. While it can regenerate lost parts, these severed appendages do not grow into new organisms. However, scientists have observed that the amputated tissues continue to thrive, a finding that was serendipitously made during research focused on the sea cucumber. Jobson highlighted that although their lab was not specifically investigating tissue longevity, the unexpected observation by a collaborator revealed that these severed parts could heal and survive without any special conditions. This accidental discovery opens new avenues for understanding regenerative biology and the potential applications of such resilient tissues.
