Is Sam Altman and Jony Ive's first AI device a pen? Here's what the leak suggest

OpenAI has stirred excitement this year with its collaboration with renowned designer Jony Ive, following the acquisition of his startup, IO. The company has ambitious plans for a new hardware device that promises to be distinct from traditional smartphones, aiming to create something entirely native to artificial intelligence. Recent insights from tipster Smart Pikachu on X (formerly Twitter) reveal that this innovative product is being referred to internally as 'Gumdrop.' Reports indicate that OpenAI is exploring three different projects in the vendor evaluation stage, including a potential pen and a portable audio device. According to a Wall Street Journal report, Sam Altman informed his team that the new gadget is designed to be pocket-sized and intended to function as a supplementary device alongside smartphones rather than serve as a replacement. Bloomberg's coverage has also hinted that the AI device might integrate built-in cameras and microphones, allowing it to remain aware of the user's environment. Additionally, it has been disclosed that the project, initially assigned to Luxshare, is shifting to Foxconn due to disagreements regarding the manufacturing location. OpenAI is reportedly seeking to avoid production in China, with Vietnam emerging as a potential site, and discussions are ongoing for manufacturing capabilities in the U.S. In a recent conversation with Emerson Collective, both Ive and Altman confirmed that multiple hardware projects are in development. They anticipate that these AI-driven devices could be introduced to the market within the next two years, pointing to a timeline around 2027. Altman expressed his enthusiasm about the initial prototypes, stating, "We have the first prototypes. I can’t believe how jaw-dropping good the work is and how exciting it is." Ive emphasized his design philosophy, saying, "I love solutions that teeter on the appearing, almost naive, in their simplicity. And I also love incredibly intelligent, sophisticated products that you want to touch and feel no intimidation, and you want to use almost carelessly — that you will use them almost without thought." The tech community is eagerly awaiting further developments from OpenAI and Jony Ive as they embark on this innovative venture.
