Clicks Technology is bringing a nostalgic twist to modern smartphones with the introduction of its latest device, the $499 Communicator. This new smartphone features a physical keyboard reminiscent of the iconic BlackBerry, appealing to those who miss tactile typing. Additionally, the company offers an optional $79 slide-out keyboard compatible with any device. During CES, TechCrunch had an exclusive hands-on session with a prototype of the Communicator, guided by Clicks' co-founder and chief marketing officer, Jeff Gadway. This upcoming smartphone runs on Android 16, enabling users to access a wide variety of applications. To enhance user experience, Clicks has partnered with Niagara Launcher, allowing for a streamlined homescreen layout with quick access to favorite apps. Reception for the Communicator has surpassed expectations, according to Gadway, who shared that the company has achieved a sale every 6.5 seconds across both the Communicator and its keyboard accessory. Although the prototype showcased was non-functional, it closely resembles the final product set to launch later this year. One of the standout features is its interchangeable back covers, allowing users to customize their phone's appearance. The prototype design is expected to include a small notch for easy removal and a finger pick for convenience. The device boasts an impressive 256GB of onboard storage, expandable via microSD up to 2TB, and is powered by a 4000mAh silicon-carbon battery. The Communicator's design prioritizes comfort and usability. The contours of the back make it easy to hold, and the elevated screen protects the physical keys when placed face down. A unique “Signal Light” on the side can glow in various colors to indicate notifications from specific contacts, ensuring important messages catch your attention while minimizing distractions from less urgent alerts. Gadway noted that the tactile feedback of the physical keys is a hot topic among the developers, with ongoing discussions about the pressure required for optimal responsiveness. The keyboard's design aims to balance accessibility for new users with the preferences of seasoned typists. The Communicator also features a 24-megapixel front camera and a 50-megapixel rear camera equipped with optical and electronic image stabilization. It operates on a MediaTek 4-nanometer 5G IoT processor with 8GB of RAM and showcases a 4.03-inch AMOLED display at a resolution of 1,080 x 1,200. Charging capabilities include wired options up to 18 watts and wireless charging up to 15 watts, compatible with Qi standards. To appeal to security-conscious users, the phone will provide five years of security and Android updates, ensuring longevity in a rapidly evolving tech landscape. The anticipated release for the Communicator is slated for the latter half of 2026.
