Windows’ classic 3DSpace Cadetpinball is getting a physical re-creation

For many who used Windows in the late 1990s and early 2000s, the name 3D Pinball for Windows – Space Cadet evokes a wave of nostalgia. This virtual pinball game was included for free in several Microsoft operating systems up to Windows XP, captivating players with its surprisingly authentic gameplay. However, while fans enjoyed the digital experience, Space Cadet was never based on a physical pinball machine; it originated as part of the Full Tilt! Pinball software collection from Maxis, launched in 1995. Over the years, enthusiasts have frequently discussed the idea of crafting a real-life version of Space Cadet, but tangible efforts have been scarce. A notable attempt was made by Deeproot Pinball, which developed a prototype based on Space Cadet's layout for a 2021 release, but the company faced setbacks and ultimately dissolved amid fraud allegations. Now, hobbyist CNCDan is stepping up to turn this beloved digital game into a physical reality. He has begun documenting his build process through videos, showcasing innovative features such as 3D-printed mechanical flippers, pop bumpers with embedded LEDs, slingshots, and a raised playfield—all designed to replicate the original game's aesthetic. However, the transition from a digital to a physical format hasn't come without challenges. CNCDan has encountered issues with scaling and positioning the elements of the table. After adjusting the perspective of the Space Cadet playfield to fit a 1-meter-tall table, he found himself with a rectangular playfield measuring just 56 cm wide. This size is on the smaller side for commercial pinball machines, leading to playfield bumpers that are only 53 mm wide—far smaller than standard commercially available bumpers.
