Over 30 years later, a rare LaserDisc game console gets its first PC emulator

In an exciting development for retro gaming enthusiasts, a classic console from the 90s has just made its debut on PC emulation. Last week, Ares v146 was released, introducing groundbreaking support for Mega LD titles originally designed for the Pioneer LaserActive, a gaming system that has long been considered a rare gem. Launched in 1994, the LaserActive was more than just a gaming console; it was a high-end LaserDisc player that offered interchangeable modules to play titles from both the Sega Genesis and NEC TurboGrafx-16. This unique setup allowed gamers to experience specially crafted games that integrated both video and gameplay, delivering a unique interactive experience that was ahead of its time. The Mega LD games, catering to the Genesis platform, were essentially enhanced versions of the games typical for early CD-ROM consoles. They included a mix of educational games, immersive dungeon crawlers, and animated quick-time events reminiscent of the iconic Dragon's Lair. Players could also enjoy rail shooters that combined traditional graphics with stunning animated backgrounds, sometimes featuring live-action footage. Despite its innovative approach, the LaserActive struggled in the market due to its exorbitant price tag—$970 for the base unit and $120 for games in the 90s—leading to estimated total sales of only around 10,000 units in Japan and the U.S. This lack of mainstream success meant that the LaserActive remained a niche product, but it has since garnered a dedicated following of collectors who are passionate about preserving and enjoying games that are otherwise hard to access through modern emulation. With the recent emulation capabilities now available, fans are thrilled to revisit the unique offerings of the LaserActive, breathing new life into this historically significant console.
