Halo: Campaign Evolved release date, platforms and what's new explained

The iconic saga of Halo is being revitalized for today's gamers with the announcement of Halo: Campaign Evolved. Microsoft and Halo Studios revealed the remake on October 24, 2023, marking a significant milestone for the franchise. This reimagining of the original Halo: Combat Evolved campaign is scheduled to hit the shelves in 2026, compatible with Xbox Series X|S, PC (via Xbox and Steam), and PlayStation 5, alongside full support for Xbox Cloud Gaming and Play Anywhere. Halo: Campaign Evolved aims to blend nostalgia with modern gaming advancements. Utilizing Unreal Engine 5, the remake promises breathtaking 4K visuals, re-recorded voice lines, updated animations, and remastered music to enhance the beloved experience from 2001. According to Halo Studios, the goal is to capture the essence of the original game while elevating it for a contemporary audience, creating what they describe as a "modern evolution" that remains true to its roots. In addition to the revamped classic missions, the remake will introduce three new prequel missions that delve deeper into the storyline, featuring fresh environments, characters, and enemies to enrich the lore. One of the notable updates includes a complete overhaul of The Library, improving its navigation and tension while preserving its signature atmosphere. Returning players can look forward to a mix of familiar and new gameplay elements. The remake will feature nine additional weapons from the Halo series, such as the Energy Sword, Battle Rifle, and Needle Rifle, and will enable players to hijack vehicles, a feature that was not present in the original game. Players can also pilot the formidable Covenant Wraith tank and enjoy optional sprinting as well as an expanded Skull system with a variety of modifiers. Moreover, the game will support four-player online co-op gameplay and bring back two-player split-screen on consoles, ensuring that both new and longtime fans can enjoy the experience together. Executive Producer Damon Conn emphasized that this project serves as a bridge between generations, aiming for a perfect entry point for newcomers while respecting the memories of veteran players. Players will have the chance to experience the revamped gameplay during the Halo World Championships, providing an early look at this ambitious project. As Conn stated, "We’re not rewriting Halo’s legacy — we’re immersing players in it like never before." With its 2026 launch on the horizon, Halo: Campaign Evolved is set to redefine the classic for a new era of gamers.
