Internal emails show how Amazon raises prices across the Internet, lawsuit says

Recently disclosed emails have shed light on the controversial practices employed by Amazon to influence pricing across the internet, according to California Attorney General Rob Bonta. In a press release, Bonta described how Amazon collaborates with competitors to systematically raise prices on a wide array of products, spanning from diapers to furniture. Bonta's allegations highlight a troubling strategy where Amazon and its rivals deliberately cease price matching. This maneuver enables one retailer to hike prices, prompting the other to follow suit, ultimately leading to higher costs for consumers and increased profit margins for the companies involved. The emails originated from a lawsuit filed by California in 2022, which accuses Amazon of using its significant market power to coerce vendors into inflating prices on competing e-commerce platforms or even withdrawing products from cheaper sites entirely. According to The New York Times, these communications reveal a rare glimpse into the inner workings of Amazon's vast $2.66 trillion business. The Attorney General outlined three primary methods by which Amazon pressures vendors to manipulate competitor pricing. In one approach, Amazon suggests a price match by agreeing to increase its own product prices or temporarily halting sales, which allows rival retailers to raise their prices accordingly. Conversely, when Amazon identifies a competitor selling at an undesirable price, it encourages vendors to push those rivals to increase their prices to align with Amazon's preferences. In a more aggressive tactic, Amazon allegedly pressures vendors to eliminate products from lower-priced platforms entirely, thereby avoiding the need to lower its own prices. All these strategies reportedly contribute to a rise in prices for consumers. Bonta noted that vendors often responded swiftly to Amazon's requests for price hikes, with some adjustments occurring within just a day, driven by fears of potential repercussions from the retail giant.
