Cockatoos know 30 distinct dance moves

In a fascinating exploration of avian rhythm, researchers have found that cockatoos possess a remarkable repertoire of 30 distinct dance moves. This groundbreaking discovery builds on the viral fame of Snowball, a cockatoo who became an internet sensation back in 2008 with his impressive dancing skills set to the tunes of the Backstreet Boys. Snowball's extraordinary abilities challenged long-held beliefs that only humans could synchronize their movements to music. He even earned a Guinness World Record for the most dance moves performed by a bird. However, recent findings suggest that Snowball might soon face competition. A new study published in the journal PLoS ONE highlights the varied and complex dance behaviors exhibited by different parrot species, with 17 of these moves being previously unrecorded in scientific literature. The research, conducted by a team at Charles Sturt University in Australia, examined the dancing habits of cockatoos by reviewing videos from platforms like YouTube, Facebook, and TikTok. To qualify for the study, the videos had to depict cockatoos dancing in a domestic setting alongside music, with each video showcasing a unique bird performing at least two different dance moves. The analysis resulted in a collection of 45 videos featuring individual dancing cockatoos, which were scrutinized to identify their specific movements. By referencing a previously established framework of known dance movements from 2019 related to Snowball, the researchers were able to compile a detailed 'dancing ethogram' that defined and categorized the new movements. While the exact reasons behind the cockatoos’ love for dancing remain unclear, encouraging this behavior could significantly enhance the well-being of these intelligent birds in captivity, helping them adapt more successfully to their often challenging environments.
