Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has recently shared intriguing figures regarding the energy consumption associated with a typical ChatGPT query. According to Altman, each interaction utilizes around 0.34 watt-hours of electricity and 0.000085 gallons of water, which is roughly equivalent to one-fifteenth of a teaspoon. In a blog post titled The Gentle Singularity, he likened the energy usage to that of an oven running for just over a second or a high-efficiency lightbulb operating for a few minutes. This represents the most comprehensive public insight into the environmental impact of OpenAI's AI technologies to date, with these numbers being significantly lower than previous estimates. A report from The Washington Post in 2023 had suggested that generating a simple 100-word email using GPT-4 could consume more than a bottle of water, with consumption rates varying based on the data center's location. Altman also addressed the rising concerns regarding the sustainability of AI systems as they become larger and more widely utilized. He noted, "The economic value creation has initiated a flywheel effect, leading to increased infrastructure development necessary to support these powerful AI systems." Furthermore, he posited that as data center operations advance towards automation, the overall cost of intelligence might eventually align closely with the cost of electricity. By sharing these statistics, OpenAI aims to promote transparency about its operational and environmental impact, especially as policymakers and researchers express growing concerns about the long-term energy demands of AI technologies. Earlier this year, some experts predicted that by the end of 2025, AI could consume more energy than Bitcoin mining. In a notable mention, Altman revealed that user politeness, such as including "please" and "thank you" in queries, has led to substantial electricity costs for the company, amounting to tens of millions of dollars over time. As the environmental ramifications of AI continue to gain attention, disclosures like these are expected to shape public perception and potentially influence future regulations.
