Russian hackers were behind $2.5 billion hack of Jaguar Land Rover: report

A significant cyber attack on Jaguar Land Rover, a leading automotive firm in the U.K., disrupted production for several months and had a considerable impact on the nation’s economy. This breach prompted the UK government to intervene with a substantial bailout of £1.5 billion (approximately $2 billion). Estimates suggest that the total economic fallout from the attack reached around $2.5 billion. For a long time, the identity of the perpetrators remained a mystery, but recent reports from The New York Times, citing individuals familiar with the ongoing investigation, indicate that the attackers were linked to Russian hackers. However, the exact nature of their affiliations remains ambiguous. It is still uncertain whether they acted independently, were state-sponsored, or operated with the Russian government’s implicit consent. Microsoft had been monitoring the activities of the Russian hacking group and provided Jaguar Land Rover with crucial information regarding the identities of the hackers. In addition to Microsoft, multiple agencies, including the FBI, the National Crime Agency, the National Cyber Security Centre in the UK, as well as Google’s Mandiant unit and Palo Alto Networks, participated in the investigation. Interestingly, the Russian hackers were not the only group to infiltrate Jaguar Land Rover's networks. A hacker from Jordan, known as Rey, also managed to breach the company’s systems, highlighting the complex challenges faced in the realm of cybersecurity.
