Google upgrades Android Auto with Gemini features, video apps, and smarter features

On May 12, Google unveiled significant enhancements to Android Auto, introducing features powered by its Gemini technology and support for video applications. At the Android Show, the tech giant highlighted that the upgraded Auto operating system will deliver a more engaging experience, premium entertainment options, and intelligent assistance in compatible vehicles. One of the standout improvements is the introduction of video app support, allowing users to stream content from platforms like YouTube. This feature promises full HD video quality at 60fps but comes with a safety caveat: videos can only be viewed when the vehicle is parked. As soon as the car transitions from 'park' to 'drive,' playback will automatically shift to audio-only mode. Upcoming support will extend to cars from brands such as BMW, Ford, Genesis, Hyundai, Kia, Mahindra, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Škoda, Tata, and Volvo. In addition to video capabilities, Android Auto will also enhance audio experiences with support for media applications like Spotify and YouTube Music, featuring immersive sound through Dolby Atmos technology. A key highlight of this upgrade is the integration of Gemini Intelligence, set to debut later this year. This advanced feature aims to understand user context and manage tasks more efficiently. Demonstrated features include Magic Cue, which allows for quick address sharing from notifications, and voice controls enabling users to place food orders through delivery apps effortlessly. Moreover, the revamped Android Auto will offer a new Immersive Navigation feature. This upgrade presents an edge-to-edge map design that enhances visual appeal and maximizes viewing space. Vehicles equipped with 'Google built-in' will benefit from live lane guidance, delivering real-time, accurate lane instructions by utilizing the car's front-facing camera to assess road conditions and assist drivers in staying on course during navigation.
