New battery, new motor, but the 2027 Chevrolet Bolt keeps its charm

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif.—The Chevrolet Bolt made its initial splash in 2017 as an affordable electric hatchback, offering over 200 miles of range at a price significantly lower than the Tesla Model S. Despite its popularity, the Bolt faced challenges, including a hefty $1.8 billion recall that affected more than 142,000 vehicles due to battery issues. The pandemic further complicated matters, causing delays in the Bolt's midlife refresh. Nevertheless, the vehicle underwent notable upgrades, receiving a price reduction, new seating, enhanced infotainment, and the introduction of Super Cruise, along with a larger variant known as the Bolt EUV. Over time, the Bolt emerged as General Motors' top-selling electric vehicle, outperforming newer models utilizing the Ultium platform. In a surprising twist, GM announced plans to discontinue the Bolt as they shifted focus to retooling the Orion Township plant for upcoming full-size electric pickups, such as the Silverado EV. This decision was met with backlash from loyal Bolt fans. In response, GM CEO Mary Barra revealed at CES 2023 that the Bolt would make a comeback, featuring an all-new lithium iron phosphate battery to replace the previous lithium-ion version. Originally the only electric offering from GM, the Bolt now benefits from a broadened parts inventory, incorporating components such as the drive motor from the Equinox EV and a new Android Automotive OS for its infotainment system. Specifications and pricing were shared as early as last October, including the introduction of a sportier RT trim alongside the standard LT version. In January, further details emerged, confirming a competitive 262-mile (422 km) range and the capability for DC fast charging at up to 150 kW with a NACS socket. After getting behind the wheel of the 2027 Bolt, we’re excited to share our impressions.
