Review:Knight of the Seven Kingdomsbrings back that Westeros magic

HBO has once again struck gold with its latest series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which draws inspiration from George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas. This new series has received widespread acclaim, and the first season finale has left fans eagerly anticipating what’s next for its characters. Unlike other recent entries in the franchise, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has successfully rekindled the magic that originally captivated Game of Thrones enthusiasts. The show adapts the inaugural novella, The Hedge Knight, and takes place fifty years after the events of House of the Dragon, showcasing a blend of nostalgia and fresh storytelling. The narrative follows Dunk (played by Peter Claffey), a humble hedge knight who has just laid his mentor, Ser Arlan of Pennytree (Danny Webb), to rest. Although not the most virtuous mentor, Ser Arlan left Dunk with valuable possessions, including a sword and shield. In search of purpose, Dunk decides to participate in a local tournament. During his journey, Dunk encounters Egg (portrayed by Dexter Sol Ansell), a bald-headed boy who expresses a desire to become his squire. Initially hesitant, Dunk ultimately accepts Egg’s companionship, adopting the title of Ser Duncan the Tall. However, he faces a significant hurdle: to enter the tournament, he requires the endorsement of a knight or lord who remembers Ser Arlan. After several fruitless attempts, Dunk eventually meets Prince Baelor “Breakspear” Targaryen (Bertie Carvel), who agrees to vouch for him. As the tournament unfolds, Dunk and Egg find themselves participating in a friendly tug-of-war led by Ser Lyonel Baratheon (Daniel Ings), also known as the “Laughing Storm.” Their adventure is further enriched by a captivating puppet show featuring Tanselle (Tanzyn Crawford), which mesmerizes Egg while Dunk finds himself taken by Tanselle's charm. The camaraderie between Dunk and Egg grows stronger as they cheer for the jousting knights, setting the stage for their upcoming adventures.
