The Virtual Console is (sort of) back on the Switch 2

In a significant move for nostalgic gamers, Hamster Corporation has stepped in to fill the void left by Nintendo's Virtual Console, which was discontinued in 2018. Instead of the previous model that allowed players to download classic games on the Wii and Wii U, Nintendo now offers a limited selection via a paid Nintendo Switch Online subscription. During the recent Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase, Hamster announced the launch of its Console Archives, a new initiative that allows players to purchase retro console games individually on the Switch 2. This exciting announcement marks a return of beloved classics, starting with the original PlayStation snowboarding game, Cool Boarders, priced at $12, and the NES action platformer, Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos, available for $8. Notably, Hamster has plans to expand its collection with more obscure titles, such as Doraemon and Sonic Wings Special, in the near future. Hamster Corporation is no stranger to the gaming scene; it has been behind the Arcade Archive series since 2014, offering individual arcade games for modern consoles. This series has celebrated over 500 releases, including several classic Nintendo arcade games that never made it onto the original Virtual Console. The company aims to faithfully reproduce gaming masterpieces from various home consoles, enabling players to enjoy them on the latest hardware. Although these new offerings may lack the extensive interactive features seen in releases from companies like Digital Eclipse, they still provide modern conveniences, such as customizable button layouts, adjustable screen settings, and the ability to save and load games at any moment. Gamers can look forward to a revitalized retro experience as Hamster continues to expand its offerings.
