From ‘can we’ to ‘should we’: The new playbook for AI responsible innovation by Adobe

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has evolved significantly, moving beyond simple chatbots to become a vital tool integrated into various industries. However, with its increased accessibility comes a heightened awareness of the associated risks. Experts are now shifting the conversation from whether AI can be developed to whether it should be implemented responsibly. At the recent India AI Impact Summit 2026, Jennifer Mulveny, Director of Government Relations at Adobe Asia Pacific, emphasized this philosophical shift in AI strategy among major corporations. "For Adobe, the question is not just can we develop and deploy AI — it’s should we?" Mulveny stated, highlighting the importance of ethical considerations in AI development. Every AI tool at Adobe undergoes scrutiny by their AI Ethics Review Board, where engineers must present their proposals for assessment. Mulveny stressed that the potential human impact should guide decision-making for companies developing AI tools that influence various sectors, including creative workflows and professional livelihoods. "If we don’t prioritize human considerations, we could face significant challenges," she cautioned. Mulveny also pointed to India’s role as a significant player in the global AI landscape, primarily as a consumer. She remarked, "When relying on third-party foundation model providers, it’s difficult to fully understand the AI supply chain." This lack of transparency underscores the need to comprehend how these AI models are constructed and trained to foster trust in the innovations they support. She warned that if governance and trust are treated as an afterthought, India risks falling behind in the AI race. "It’s essential that we not only focus on making AI functional but also on ensuring it is trustworthy, especially in the context of India’s unique needs," Mulveny concluded. The transition from asking "Can we build this?" to "Should we deploy this?" is vital for the evolution of AI on a global scale.
