Trump admin didn’t want Ebola-exposed Americans, sent them to Berlin, Prague

An American doctor infected with Ebola is currently receiving treatment in Berlin, while another individual exposed to the virus is being transferred to Prague. This development follows reports that the Trump administration was hesitant to allow these citizens to return to the United States for necessary medical care and monitoring. According to sources cited by The Washington Post, the situation unfolded over the weekend when Peter Stafford, a 39-year-old surgeon working in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, tested positive for Ebola after exhibiting symptoms. The delay in his evacuation raised concerns among health experts, who emphasize the importance of prompt treatment for Ebola, which can become deadly in a matter of days. On Monday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed that Stafford had arrived in Germany and is currently in stable condition. His wife, Rebekah Stafford, who also worked in the DRC and was exposed to the virus but remains asymptomatic, along with their four children, have also been transported to Germany for safety. Another physician, Patrick LaRochelle, who worked alongside the Staffords, was also exposed but is asymptomatic and is being moved to Prague for monitoring and care. His family, who accompanied him in the DRC, has been flown back to the U.S. after the CDC determined they had not been exposed to the virus. The Ebola outbreak, linked to the rare Bundibugyo virus strain, was first reported as a public health emergency by the World Health Organization (WHO). As of Wednesday, the outbreak has resulted in 528 suspected cases and 132 deaths, marking a significant escalation from the previous figures of 246 suspected cases and 65 deaths reported on Friday. It's still uncertain when U.S. officials became aware of Stafford's exposure, but discussions regarding his evacuation reportedly faced pushback from the highest levels of the administration. Sources revealed that there was a reluctance to permit Stafford's return to the U.S., echoing Trump’s past criticisms of allowing American Ebola patients to be treated domestically during previous crises.
