As companies rethink AI ROI, Replit's AI chief calls token leaderboards 'very dystopian'

In a recent address at Web Summit Rio, Michele Catasta, president and head of AI at Replit, voiced strong criticism of a growing trend in Silicon Valley where employees compete to utilize the most AI tokens. This phenomenon, dubbed 'tokenmaxxing', has led to the implementation of internal leaderboards in some companies, ranking individuals based on their token consumption. Catasta described this competitive culture as 'very dystopian,' highlighting how it encourages staff to showcase their token usage rather than focusing on meaningful contributions to the organization. He noted that some firms have developed dashboards that display these rankings, fostering an environment where employees aim to outdo one another in token usage without regard for the actual impact of their work. The backlash against this practice comes amidst a broader reevaluation of how companies measure AI adoption and performance. For instance, Amazon recently abandoned its own internal AI-use leaderboard, emphasizing that it was never meant to encourage AI usage for its own sake. Similarly, Uber's COO Andrew Macdonald expressed concerns about not seeing proportional productivity benefits from rising AI costs. Moreover, Charles Holive, chief AI officer at BNP Paribas CIB, labeled 'tokenmaxxing' a mere 'vanity metric.' Catasta echoed these sentiments, arguing that token consumption does not accurately reflect an employee’s effectiveness. He remarked, 'Using AI excessively comes with a certain level of impact,' drawing a parallel to wasting energy at home by leaving lights on unnecessarily. He cautioned that excessive AI use could lead to inefficiencies and limit resources available for other innovative projects.
