The gaming world mourns the loss of Tomonobu Itagaki, the celebrated Japanese game designer, director, and producer, who has died at the age of 58. Itagaki is widely recognized for his pioneering work on the iconic fighting game series Dead or Alive and for revitalizing the Ninja Gaiden franchise. His close friend, James Mielke, shared the heartbreaking news of Itagaki's passing via social media platforms Instagram and Bluesky. Itagaki had been battling a serious illness that worsened in his final days. In a poignant farewell, he posted a final message on Facebook shortly before his death. Born on May 1, 1967, Itagaki made a significant impact on the gaming industry during his tenure at Tecmo, where he began working in 1992. He played a crucial role in the establishment and leadership of Team Ninja, the development studio that brought forth some of Tecmo's most celebrated titles. Under his guidance, Team Ninja released Dead or Alive in 1996, a game that gained fame for its dynamic mechanics and distinctive character designs. He also spearheaded the successful reboot of the Ninja Gaiden series for the Xbox in 2004. After departing from Tecmo, Itagaki founded a new studio alongside several former colleagues from Team Ninja. He also established another studio in 2021 and was in the process of developing a new game at the time of his passing. In his final Facebook message, Itagaki reflected on his life, stating, "The flame of my life is finally about to go out. If this message has been posted, that means the time has come - I am no longer in this world. My life was a constant battle. And I kept on winning. I have no regrets. I only feel deep sorrow that I couldn't deliver a new work to all my fans. That's just how it goes. So it goes." His legacy in the gaming industry will not be forgotten.
